Back to School 2020/2021

I didn’t do a good job of taking the first day of school pictures, we didn’t really have an official first day of to start- but I would say it was after  Labor Day we “started” school... and since then we’ve been doing more and more each day and the kids are pretty good about getting all of their work completed. Some days are better than others, but I’m okay with what we do and the ability and freedom of our time and how we do things together- lots and lots of learning time together.

So here is my attempt at taking pictures of the kids at the start of the school year late Sept/Oct 2020

First day of school 2019

It’s always a little tricky moving and making sure everyone is ready for their first day of school. This year felt a little more difficult moving out of the hotel and into the Hulls house (a missionary couple that has their house available for people who need it while they are away)— driving the kids to school and then picking them up at the end of the day. We did this for about a week before we would move into our empty house on the base, where we will have a bus to complete that task for the elementary kids.

FIELD TRIPS by Connor

We went to the state capitol building in Honolulu and walked around. We looked at a metal statue of Queen Liliuokalani. We also saw a copy of the Liberty Bell. I saw the real one in Philadelphia. We got back on the bus and went back to school.

This was at the Tenney Children's Theater of PEACH BOY. First an old lady wanted a child and when she was washing the clothes she found a peach in the river. She picked it up and said "this would be a good meal for dinner" and next thing you know it's dinner time. When they tried to cut up the peach a boy popped out of it! The old man was cutting down wood and these trolls took his lunch. The peach boy, when he was older, went and tried to make the trolls happy, but he had a long way to get there. He met a bird, dog, cat, and a monkey. I liked this play. We also saw THUMBELINA later in the year. It was kind of like PEACH BOY, I think that THUJMBELINA and PEACH BOY are brother and sister.

This was a trip to SEA LIFE PARK. We are sitting getting ready to watch the seal show. They had some pretty good tricks. One seal painted a picture of an angel. I am sitting by my good friends William and Amory. Amory is a big goof, it doesn't really look like he is but I kind of laugh at him.


After a fun day.... We also saw a dolphin show and my teacher is on the left. Her name is Mrs. Destura. She is a nice and likes me, William, and Amory. We usually get things done quickly at school.

Our last field trip: THE JAPANESE CULTURAL CENTER. I got to try on a Japanese sweater, or kimono. It isn't as big as the Polynesian Cultural Center, but it was still good.

BRECONs 1st grade party

Brecon was walking out the door in his normal clothes when I suddenly remembered it was a cowboy dress-up day for his grade. Luckily, having cowboy clothes on hand is second nature to the Platt's. We grabbed a shirt, hat, bandana, and this guy was ready to go!

All the first graders were in the multi-purpose room in circles for the dance. After they did it, the parents were asked to join in on the fun. We had a fun time shouting "YEE-haw!" slapping our knees, and going circles. Favorite time was raising our arms in the middle- says Brecon.

Brecon  looked especially good later that evening at the hospital. We were getting our flu shots as a family. Now that is one handsome looking cowboy!

 Connor has been having such a great time in his Pre-K class. He still tells me his favorite part of the day is singing time, but I think they are doing some really fun art and texture activities too!

First Day of School

Connor went for the first time to 2 1/2 hours of Pre-Kindergarten today at the school. I was able to watch his first interactions with classmates and the first circle and story time.
The book that was read "The Kissing Hand" almost got me misty in the eyes. The story is about a little raccoon going to school for the first time and how he is a little nervous. His mother shows him that he can always feel his mother's love and she gives him a kiss on his hand. After the book finished I was able to go over to Connor, kiss his little hand, and put a little pink heart in his palm. He was smiling and excited as I left with Brielle in my arms, a little sad, but also happy for Connor and his new adventure.

That first day went really quickly and before I knew it, it was time to walk back up to the school to get Connor. Picking him up I could see that he was happy and had a great time. When I asked what his favorite thing today was: SINGING TIME.

First Day of School (Older Boys)

This year was quite a change for our family with Cael reaching 5th grade he would be attending Middle school and Brecon would be in 1st grade at the Elementary school. I think Cael was a little nervous about having a locker and going to different classes. He wasn't sure how he felt about these big changes.

One of the neat things about Cael in middle school is he and Ben walk out of the door together at the same time. As long as we can get lunches packed and everything else ready in time, then it all works out. There have been a few days where Cael isn't quite ready, and he gets quite upset about not walking with his Dad.

Brecon was acting pretty goofy on the first morning as we walked him to the front of the school. He read the sign and made a crazy face (above) and then for the group picture he is looking rather violent towards the green circle (below).

He really is such a good and independent boy. All last year he was basically walking himself to line up with his teachers in the morning. This year he insists on walking all by himself, although some days I "tag" along or if he is acting difficult he will have to hold my hand the whole way. He wants to be first in line but that doesn't always happen. He runs as fast as he can at the end of the day through the back field and forest. His reading is improving and I can see his confidence in that area growing each time we read together.
