Spring break in Alaska
I had a few ideas of some things but I wanted to do the kids while they were out of school on our break. The plan was to do some thing out of the house each day and then come home and the kids could play, and most of the time it worked. My biggest push back from having fun came from Cael- who claimed to have homework he needed to work on right at the same time of our outings.
.
Day 1 Cannon was chosen to spend the morning with Winston the box turtle at the local library- but we couldn’t bring any siblings... so the big kids stayed home and watched TV. We had friends invite us to go to the ski hill but Cael had made plans to do a video with some friends at the exact same time. So we all stayed home until Ben came home from work.
Day 2 We all made waffles for breakfast and then I took all of the kids to the children’s museum for a couple of hours. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and were playing so well together. I thought I had been extra prepared and had all of our skis loaded up so that we could go straight to the ski hill but when we got there we had forgotten our ski passes! So we had to go home and get the rest of our gear and then go back to the ski hill for a couple of runs down the mountain with our friends, the Aitons.
Day 3 Wednesday Cael and I had dental appointments in the morning and then we decided to go meet some friends at the Eielson air force base community center, a big indoor play zone with pool tables, ping pong tables, video games, and a large play ground set. We met my friend Angela Jones and then went over to her house for lunch and to let the kids hang out. On the way home we stopped at the Santa Claus house and walked around the shop and got their picture taken with the one and only Santa!
Day 4 Today I was meeting with our friends the Jones is at the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and then I planned to take the kids on the sledding and tubing hill by the campus. I really enjoyed the museum and they had a nice little scavenger hunt for the kids to do around to find different animals or artifacts upstairs and downstairs, all mostly native Alaskan art and animals in the exhibits.
After we were done at the museum we had a little snack and went over to the sledding hill. It was quite an ordeal to have everybody put on their snow clothes, it was still quite cold outside. We made it up finally to the hill and everyone went down one time and the second... but on the third time there was an incident. bad collision between Connor and Cael after a crash and Connor was hurt quite badly eWe made it up finally to the hill and everyone went down one time and the second time we were all trying to go down together on a couple of tubes- Connor and Brielle and myself started first hit bumps along the steep hill and crashed leaving Connor and I on the hill and Brielle continuing down, with Cael and Cannon speeding toward us with barely enough time to get out of the way. Cael's back and head hit Connors front right shoulder and I could tell he was hurt badly, was a collision between Connor and Kayle after a crash and Connor was hurt quite badly ending our sledding fun. Whimpering and hurting the 20 minutes drive, we took him to the emergency room to get an x-ray and find out he had a broken collarbone.
Day 5 Friday .... we stayed home and there was a lot of movies and TV time. Everyone but Connor went skiing and I had planned on going to the ice park, but we scratched that due to the circumstances.
Day 6 We had friends invite us to go explore the Castner glacier but we decided not to go as a family because of poor Connors uncomfortable collarbone pain. Cael went with friends and was able to take some pretty cool pictures and video of the adventure. Hopefully we can do that before we leave Alaska!
